to find human wisdom for birds in their habitats

Birdlife Indonesia, Oxford University, and AC Nielsen recently conducted a study on Birdkeeping Hobbies in Indonesia. This is done to get the best solution between the birdkeeping hobby and bird population in their habitats.

As we know birds already become human friends for a long time ago. Function and role of birds evolved along with rapid human modernization. There are so many birds functions for human life, some of which are as a food sources,  as a spiritual materials, customs materials, and as pets.

Birds as a pet has been held for along time ago. For the Javanese. Bird is one of the object complement to get living perfection. In philosophy, and it is one of the elements of harmony and establishment symbol. Birds (kukilo), is the completeness of life than curigo (keris), turonggo (horse,) wismo (home), and wanito (wife). Birdkeeping hobby has fused with human living and very difficult to be separated. Based on economic point of view, rotation of money from the birdkeeping hobby is also very huge. The cage, food, cages accessories, vitamins and health care costs, jockey for sing competition, until the person who has job as “breeding organizer”.

On the other hand, the higher market demand for fullfilled birdkeeping hobby causing decrease of bird populations in their habitats. In fact, there are several types of bird that is now almost can not be found in their habitats such as Cucak Rowo/Straw-headed Bulbul (Pycnonotus zeylanicus). Some species, such as Anis Merah/Orange-headed Thrush (Zoothera citrina), Anis Kembang/Chestnut-capped Thrush (Zoothera interpres), Murai Batu / Kucica Hutan/White-rumped Shama (Copsychus malabaricus) is very difficult to find in the their original habitats.

To get the solution of both these interests (hobby and conservation) then need to be further research on aspects related to the hobby of birdkeeping.

SBC is actually not the first time to get the trust to do a survey like this. In 2006, SBC gain trust from Birdlife Indonesia to conduct a survey of birdkeeping hobby for household scale. SBC at this time to get the trust to do a similar survey in the  Bird sing competition  “Gebyar Semarang” in GOR Jatidiri, Semarang.

From the survey is also expected bidkeeping hobbiests can change the paradigm and behavior to just keep the birds which coming from breeding agents. Birds that come from breeding have a certificate and have a ring as a sign.

With changes in behavior, birdkeeping hobby can continue without disturb bird population in the their original habitats.
